- 1960s - This period was one of world-wide democratic and revolutionary struggle. Across Latin America, Africa, and Asia, national liberation struggles and people's revolutions were the main trend of the time. Even in the U.S. and Western Europe there were massive protest movements of youth, and oppressed populations. The right wing was violently attacking itself, and many people actually thought that the world-wide socialist revolution was right around the corner. In an effort to hide the political importance of the period, it has been redefined as primarily a period of hippies, drugs, and sex, instead of global revolution.
